The current requirements for the Minor in Mathematics became effective in Summer 2026. Required Coursework Minimum of 18 hours total Proof-writing requirement: MATH 3200 or MATH 3500 Calculus III requirement: MATH 2270 or MATH 2500, but not both Linear Algebra requirement: MATH 3000 or MATH 3300, but not both Three additional courses numbered 3000 or above Additional stipulations: MATH 3510 fulfills both the Calculus III and Linear Algebra requirements above These courses DO NOT COUNT for the three additional courses requirement: MATH 3220, 4801, 4950, 4960R, 4970R, 4980R, and 4990R. The only 5000-level courses that satisfy the three additional courses requirement are MATH 5200 and MATH 5210. Requirements for Students who Declared Prior to Summer 2026 15 hours total required: MATH 3200 and 4 more courses at the 3000- or 4000-level recommended: MATH 3000 or 3300 (Linear Algebra) good to take but do not count towards minor: MATH 2700 (Differential Equations) and MATH 2270 (Calculus III) Recommended Courses for Computer Science Majors There is significant overlap between a Minor in Mathematics and a Major in Computer Science. The following courses count as major electives for a Major in Computer Science and also count towards the Minor in Mathematics: MATH 3000 or MATH 3300 MATH 3500 MATH 3510 For a Major in Computer Science with an Area of Emphasis in Theoretical Computer Science, these courses count towards your major and towards a Minor in Mathematics: MATH 3000 or MATH 3300 MATH 4670/6670 MATH 4690/6690 Note: These courses constitute a total of 9 credit hours. Up to 8 of those hours count towards the Major in Computer Science with an Area of Emphasis in Theoretical Computer Science. Recommended Courses for Statistics Majors Statistics is built on a foundation of theoretical mathematics. The following courses count towards both a Major in Statistics and a Minor in Mathematics: MATH 3000 or MATH 3300 STAT 4510 or STAT 6510 Declaring a Mathematics Minor There is no application to the mathematics minor; students who wish to declare a mathematics minor can do so in Athena.
