Undergraduate Research

Our Undergraduate Research Program had a very successful year, under the leadership of our Undergraduate Research Coordinators Lin Mu and Robert Schneider.  Thanks to Dr. Schneider for providing information about the URP.

Five students our first annual UGA Mathematics Undergraduate Research Award for graduating math majors or minors. This is a new award issued by the UGA Mathematics Undergraduate Research Program, or URP, to graduating students who have had strong participation in URP research groups by the program's award criteria -- including research mentor recommendation; multiple semesters' contribution to faculty research programs; and contribution to a conference presentation, paper, poster, or comparable participation in the research community.  This year’s Mathematics Undergraduate Research Award recipients and their research mentors were:

Logan Bayer (research mentors: Jack Wagner and Dr. Robert Schneider)

Mikayla Bryant (research mentor Dr. Trent Schirmer)

Tianyuan Deng (research mentors: Dr. Weiwei Hu and Dr. Lin Mu)

Rose Friend (research mentor: Dr. Arik Wilbert)

AliAnn Xu (research mentors: Makoto Suwama and Dr. Robert Schneider)

Logan Bayer is taking a job at Fast Enterprises, LLC as an Implementation Consultant.  The job will be dedicated to improving software systems at government agencies/entities which help process taxes, child support, unemployment insurance and driver/vehicle services.

Our Directed Reading Program pairs graduate students with undergraduates to research topics of mutual interest, and provides a beneficial collaboration for both.  One DRP mentor-mentee pair (Matt Just, Max Schneider) grew into a sustained collaboration that produced a published paper in The Ramanujan Journal, an international number theory journal.

A number of students contributed math research projects to the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) this year.  This included 4 math major awardees of CURO's prestigious CURO Research Assistantship, a funded position with math faculty mentors (Weiwei Hu, Robert Schneider, and Arik Wilbert).  In addition, graduate students Tyler Genao and Jack Wagner who co-mentored CURO projects with Dr. Schneider, that had grown out of their earlier DRP mentorships).
