VIGRE II at UGA

The University of Georgia VIGRE II project enthusiastically fosters the training of future mathematical scientists at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels through the integration of research and teaching. This is the second Vertical Integration of Research and Education (VIGRE) grant awarded to the Department of Mathematics, one of only a dozen departments nationwide to receive a second VIGRE grant.

This prestigious five-year 3.8 million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation enables us to develop new initiatives to recruit and train U.S. mathematical scientists to meet the demands of the 21st century scientific workplace. Through it the department awards 10 graduate fellowships at a level of $25K per year. We are also able to employ four additional postdoctoral positions (VIGRE postdocs) at $45K per year for the duration of the grant.

Furthermore, the department offers a variety of VIGRE-sponsored activities, including a 12-month graduate Summer Training Program (STP), an Internship and Interdisciplinary Outreach (IIO) program, and educational outreach through the Mathematicians Educating Future Teachers (MEFT) program. In addition, VIGRE II will build on the achievements of the first VIGRE grant (2001-2006). One of them, known as the Vertical Research Groups (VRGs), brings together faculty, postdocs, and students in a laboratory-like setting to work on common research projects.
