April 19 - April 23, 2004

All Seminars are held in Boyd Graduate Studies Bldg. unless otherwise noted.

MONDAY, April 19, 2004

VIGRE - Algebra
2:30p.m., Room 410
Speaker: Jerry Hower, University of Georgia
Title of talk: I will discuss the proof of the conjectures concerning N_r(g) being the orbit closure of a appropriate
single orbit for the B,C,D type root systems in their bad characteristic p=2.

Topology
2:30p.m., Room 322
No meeting this week

Faculty and Graduate Social
3:00p.m., Room 409
Coffee, Cookies, Tea

Lie Theory
3:30p.m., Room 303
Speaker: Brian Boe, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Representation type of the blocks of category ${\mathcal O}_S$
Abstract: This will be an amalgamation of my talk of the same title from Sept. 29, 2003, and Dan Nakano's talk on representation type from the previous week.

Stochastic Processes
3:30p.m., Room 410
Speaker:
Billy Jackson, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Stochastic Differential Equations
Abstract: We will classify certain SDEs and begin trying to analyze the linear case. Homogeneous and nonhomogeneous cases will be considered. Time permitting, numerical techniques may also be presented.

TUESDAY, April 20, 2004

VIGRE Graduate Student Seminar
2:00p.m., Room 304
Speaker:
Nadia Mazza, Univeristy of Georgia
Title of talk: p-fusion in finite groups and the case of the dihedral group of order 8
Abstract: Fix a subgroup H of a finite group G. Two subgroups (or elements) X and Y of H are fused in G if they are not conjugate in H but they are conjugate in G. This property has been studied for a long time and the case where we look at fusion of p-subgroups is a key tool in the local analysis of finite groups. I will give two equivalent definitions and some basic results of the p-fusion in finite groups. Then, I will illustrate this phenomenon by considering the case p=2 and finite groups having a 2-Sylow subgroup isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 8. I will make the talk as self-contained as possible.

Special Seminar in Analysis
2:00-4:00p.m., Ga Tech, Rm. 255
Speaker: TBA
Title of talk: TBA

Wavelet Analysis
2:00p.m., Room 326
Speaker: Ming-Jun Lai, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Box spline tight frames for image denoising
Abstract: We shall use the well-known soft-thresholding method for image denoising. Instead of using wavelets, we use box spline tight-frames. It turns out that the tight-frames can do an excellent job. Comparison to Haar, Daubechies D4 and biorthogonal 9/7 will be shown.

WEDNESDAY, April 21, 2004

Berkovich Spaces Seminar
11:00a.m., Room 410

Title of talk: Convergence analysis of the argumented Lagrange iteration algorithm

Number Theory
3:45p.m., Room 304
Speaker: Pavlos Tzermias, University of Tennessee
Title: On a theorem of Stickelberger
Abstract: We give an explicit version of a classical theorem of Stickelberger on the representation of certain integers
by binary quadratic forms. This is achieved by generalizing Stickelberger's original congruences via an extension of a
recent result of Young.
