Graduate Program
The Department of Mathematics of the University of Georgia is a vibrant mathematical community. The department currently holds an NSF VIGRE grant providing financial support for graduate students, and stimulating research and teaching collaborations among the math faculty, postdoctoral associates, graduate students, and undergraduates. Ours is one of only a dozen mathematics and statistics departments nationwide to receive a second VIGRE grant. We are noted for the friendliness of our faculty and students, and for our flexibility in adapting programs to the needs of each individual student. The department has particularly active research groups in algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, geometry, number theory, and topology.
Degree Programs
The department offers three graduate degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Arts (MA), and Master of Applied Mathematical Sciences (MAMS). The MA degree is available in two variants: with or without thesis. The MAMS is an interdisciplinary degree emphasizing applications of mathematics to real-world problems.
Financial Aid
The Mathematics Department offers financial support to all PhD students as long as they are making satisfactory progress toward their degrees. Historically, about half of our MA and MAMS students have received financial support; recently, the percentage of supported Masters students has been higher. Available support includes eleven-month VIGRE stipends at $25,000, the prestigious Presidential Fellowships at $24,000 for five years, Graduate School Assistantships with no teaching duties for two years, and Departmental Teaching Assistantships. In addition, we support most of our graduate students during the summer.
Admission
The deadline for Fall admission with full consideration for all possible financial aid is January 1. Applications completed after that date will still be considered for admission, but will miss some financial aid opportunities. The department normally does not admit students for Spring semester, as both our assistantship budget and our program of courses are geared toward Fall starts.
NEW: Effective with applications for Fall 2009, the admissions committee highly recommends that applicants take the Mathematics Subject GRE.
