Neil Lyall wins 2012 Sandy Beaver Excellence in Teaching Award

Neil Lyall was awarded the Sandy Beaver Excellence in Teaching Award in 2012. Neil is known for motivating and presenting material with energy, enthusiasm, and clarity.

For his award nomination packet, one of his students wrote, "He was an excellent teacher in all respects. … He was also a demanding teacher in that he required us to think and work hard." Another said, "Dr. Lyall exhibited a very high quality of teaching and a dedication to his students that went far beyond what was required of him." And, last, a graduate student wrote, "In addition to outstanding clarity, immaculate board work, and charisma to burn, Dr. Lyall has a unique ability to take what appears to be dry, mysterious, or overwhelmingly technical material and bring it to life by providing illuminating, intuitive motivation and justification, as well as employing a 'discovery' technique with many of his proofs."

The Mathematics Department is very happy to recognize Neil's accomplishments and thanks him for his tireless contributions.
